BRONX, NY, July 16, 2025 — “If I’m in a position to serve… why not?”
Lenard “Charlamagne tha God” McKelvey put those words into action at Food Bank For New York City’s summer food distribution at the Bronx River Community Center. The Breakfast Club co-host — joined by Lauren LaRosa and Nyla Symone of Power 105.1 and BET — handed out breakfast to more than 100 children.
But these weren’t just any kids — they’re among the 1 in 3 Bronx kids facing food insecurity, especially during summer when school meals disappear, and families are left to cover the gap.
“It’s easier to figure life out when you’ve got some food in your stomach,” Charlamagne said. “We’re all just trying to make it through the day. The least I can do is help make someone’s start a little easier.”

Kids cheered as the trio entered the center, stopping for selfies and high-fives. Alongside interns from the NYC Summer Youth Employment Program, they handed out bags filled with healthy staples like fresh fruit and shelf-stable milk — all donated by Stop & Shop.

Then came the sweet surprise: an ice cream truck parked outside, ready to serve up cones topped with gummy bears, crushed cookies, and colorful drizzles. For kids who might otherwise go without, it was pure childhood summer magic.
Showing Out Year-Round
Charlamagne isn’t a one-time volunteer — he’s an outspoken Food Bank For NYC Ambassador, and part of a growing council of changemakers who use their platforms to end hunger across the five boroughs.
“I love the work the Food Bank For NYC does,” Charlamagne said. “When I saw it up close, I signed up to be an ambassador so I could amplify it. I can’t describe the rush you get when you’re of service to other people.”

The Ambassador Council connects influential New Yorkers with direct action, built on the belief that visibility drives impact.
“Our ambassadors are boots-on-the-ground allies,” said Grace Accetta, who manages the program. “They don’t just talk about change — they show up and make it happen in the city we all love.”
For Charlamagne, that commitment is personal.
A Radio Hall of Fame inductee who built the Black Effect Podcast Network and Mental Wealth Alliance on truth-telling and community service, his message remains consistent:
“If you can help,” he said, “help.”
