The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a lifeline to help New Yorkers put food on the table while still covering rent, bills, and other essentials.

With SNAP (food stamps), you can:

Am I eligible for SNAP?

Eligibility for SNAP is based on factors such as income, household size, and expenses.  To see if you qualify, use our self-screening tool above.

You typically need proof of identity, income, rent or mortgage statements, utility bills, and Social Security numbers for all household members (if applicable). Additional documents may be required based on your situation.

Yes. SNAP eligibility depends on immigration status. Green card holders, legal residents, and some mixed-status households may qualify. Even if you are not eligible, your children or other eligible household members may still receive benefits.

Receiving SNAP benefits does not count against you under the public charge rule. However, if you are concerned about how benefits might impact future immigration applications, we recommend consulting an immigration expert.

Yes. If your children are U.S. citizens or legal residents, you can apply for SNAP on their behalf, even if you are undocumented.

The processing time for SNAP applications is typically 30 days, though emergency benefits may be available within 7 days for those in urgent need.
