New York Jets players Solomon Thomas and Garrett Wilson spill why once you volunteer at Food Bank For NYC, you’ll want to keep coming back—before serving hot lunch to 141 older adults at the Community Kitchen in West Harlem. During their visit, the players opened up about the power of giving back, how their families shaped their values, and why showing up for your community is good for the soul.

Solomon Thomas:

I love New York City because, you know, it’s just a mix of so many people, so many different cultures. You got your food. You got entertainment. You got great sports teams. You just got great people.

Garrett Wilson:

There’s no better city to chase your dreams in. I just feel like I see it in a different light, being from the country a little bit.

Solomon Thomas:

And it’s an amazing city. I love it a lot.

Garrett Wilson:

You know, my parents did everything to put me in the position that I’m in now, and I owed it to them to make it to this point because they did sacrifice so much.

Solomon Thomas:

My family, my sister, you know, just taking care of me growing up, showing me how it’s important to give back—to show everyone the love, the joy, to keep them going, you know, whether it’s a smile, a hug, a donation, whatever it is. To continue to give back to the community, be a part of it.

Garrett Wilson:

I’ve always been involved with things like this back home, and my mom did a great job of putting me in a lot of things when I was younger to just be around the community. And why would I stop now, you know?

Solomon Thomas:

I would just tell people that you do have the time. I know your life is busy. I know you have everything going on, but you can schedule it in, because doing this work will do more for you than sometimes it does for the people that you’re bringing joy to. It’s important to give back, support, and connect with other people.

Garrett Wilson:

I feel like if anyone was exposed to this and did it one time, it’s one of those things that you’re gonna wanna do it more.

Solomon Thomas:

It’s just good for yourself. It’s good for the community. It’s good for your whole life. It’s a fun time to give back to other people, and it helps you find a reason and repurpose.
