For Christian, a New Yorker for 22 years, showing up means helping families put food on the table. But rising costs and changes to SNAP are making it harder to get by — especially during the holidays.

“I know that if I was to help a person, two people, an entire family, then my job is done and I am successful,” Christian says.

Christian, Food Bank For NYC Volunteer:

We live in some very difficult times today.  A lot of things we take for granted.

Something as simple as a banana, right, which could give you pretty much all the nutrients you need for breakfast. Some people are not able to afford that.

And to me, it’s not just about feeding the people today.

It’s also making sure that there is food on the table tomorrow for the entire family.

We all know that the holidays could be a difficult time for people, especially in New York City.

And being able to show up here during the holidays and making sure that families will have food on their table to celebrate the holidays again, it’s a truly rewarding feeling.

So to really be someone who could just be out there and help in giving back, in providing that to people. It’s probably one of the most rewarding experience that I’ve had so far.

I’ve been in New York for twenty two years. I’m a New Yorker now.

So showing up for my community, showing up for New York City, showing up for anybody that needs support in New York City is really what motivates me.

I wake up every day feeling good about myself simply because I know that if I was to help a person, two people, an entire family, then my job is done and I am successful.

It should all be about uplifting each other and being there to support each other, especially in in in difficult time like we are going through right now.
