MANHATTAN, NEW YORK — As Thanksgiving nears, ABC honored a true community hero.

Melissa Pino, Senior Manager of Food Bank For NYC’s Mobile Pantry, was surprised on Good Morning America for her tireless work feeding families during the 43-day federal government shutdown and SNAP halt—the longest in U.S. history. A devoted mother of two, who has navigated life as a single mom, Melissa knows firsthand the tough choices many families face—sometimes having to decide between feeding her children or covering other essentials. She has spent decades going above and beyond: saving boxes for late arrivals, personally checking on children, and making sure no New Yorker goes hungry.

“My love language is giving,” she says.

Her compassion and consistency have made the Mobile Pantry a lifeline for 60,000 families each year. She also teaches her kids, Ava and Aiden, the same lessons: put others first and share what you can.

“I’m so proud of my mom,” Ava said.

In recognition of her dedication, Disney Cruise Line surprised Melissa and her family with a five-night voyage aboard the brand-new Disney Destiny to the Bahamas, complete with shows and experiences for the whole family.

“I love doing what I do. I never expected anything in return,” Melissa shared, tears in her eyes.

This celebration honors Melissa—and the thousands of food bank workers nationwide—who step up every day to lift their communities, teaching generosity and compassion along the way.
