While providing testimony to legislative bodies, the Food Bank For New York City is able to present information from our research to key decision makers. Reducing Food Waste in New York City
June 7: Food Bank presented testimony to the New York City Council Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management. Food Bank stressed the importance of food waste reduction to closing the city’s widening Meal Gap and suggested a series of food waste reduction strategies as a complement to other policy strategies for increasing the supply of emergency food. New York City’s Executive Budget Hearing – Fiscal Year 2017
May 24: Food Bank provided testimony to the New York City Council Committee on Finance. Reaffirming the fact that 1.4 million New York City residents rely on emergency food programs each year, Food Bank urged City Council to increase funding for the New York City Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) to $22 million; improve SNAP access for New Yorkers, especially seniors, students, and working parents; and expand Universal School Meals beyond middle school students to include all New York City students. Access to Feminine Hygiene Products for New Yorkers
May 24: Food Bank testified before the New York City Council Committee on Women’s Issues, stressing the importance of increasing affordability and access to feminine hygiene products for low-income women in New York City and expressing continued support for the bills that work toward these goals. National Taxpayer Advocate Public Forum
March 18: Food Bank presented testimony to the National Taxpayer Advocate Public Forum regarding Food Bank’s Tax Assistance and Financial Services Program, one of the largest in the country. Food Bank provided suggestions to the Forum that ultimately strengthen and expand services and accessibility for clients of Food Bank’s program in New York City. Full Testimony
New York City’s Preliminary Budget Hearing – Fiscal Year 2017
March 15: Food Bank supplied testimony to the New York City Council’s General Welfare Committee. With New York City on the brink of a second Hunger Cliff, Food Bank petitioned the Council and Administration to continue prioritizing funding for EITC and HRA initiatives in the Fiscal year 2017 budget. As the impact of SNAP benefit cuts continue to intensify, Food Bank also expressed the need for increased funding for the New York City Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP) in the 2017 Executive Budget. General Welfare Hearing on Hunger
January 13: Food Bank testified before the New York City Council Committee on General Welfare. Food Bank made funding and policy recommendations to the Administration and City Council urging them to work as a unified front in order to close New York City’s growing meal gap and end hunger.
