Rolling the Activity Dice For Good Health at the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry

Every week, the seniors at the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry in West Harlem
have a nutrition education session with our registered dietitian, Shanon Morris. Combining healthy eating habits with regular physical activity is a great way for our seniors to keep their health in check, as many of them struggle are faced with high blood pressure or diabetes. These new activity dice are a fun way to encourage physical activity and engage folks in making healthy changes!

Food Network star Sunny Anderson shared her delicious and nutritious recipes with a group of 40 seniors at Food Bank’s Neighborhood Center
, a program offered at our Community Kitchen and Food Pantry in West Harlem
. Sunny’s easy grilled chicken with apple-orange sauce, roasted sweet potato mash, and kale and coconut milk were all on the menu for the seniors to enjoy. During the fun-filled demonstration, Sunny shared memories about food and family with the group. Sunny is a proud new member of Food Bank’s Culinary Council
and is doing her part to fight hunger in New York City!

There is a great deal of food insecurity in our Queens community, especially among families with children. When summer comes, it gets worse. Many of our residents rely on schools to feed their kids breakfast and lunch, and once the school year ends they have to figure out how to make up the difference. Exactly one year ago today, I had my first exposure to Food Bank For New York City's Community Kitchen & Food Pantry in West Harlem. We had just started a program at my chocolate company with the introduction of a new bar, called jcoco, where we make a donation that helps provide a fresh serving of food to American food banks in the cities where the bars are sold. In NYC, we chose Food Bank For New York City because it is an overarching organization that has far-reaching tentacles in NYC, and a clear, focused mission to stomp out hunger. Read more...
