Media Advisory: Food Bank For New York City is 'Egg-Static' to Receive Donation of More Than 100,000 Eggs from Neighboring Egg Farmers to Feed New Yorkers in Need

~ 1.4 Million New Yorkers Rely on Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries ~

The Food Bank For New York City is 'egg-static'  to receive a donation of more than 100,000 eggs  from neighboring egg farmers — Moark Eggs and Sauder Eggs — to feed New York’s hungry on Wednesday, February 9th, at 9:00a.m., at the Food Bank’s Warehouse and Distribution Center, 355 Food Center Drive (in the Hunts Point Cooperative Market), Bronx, NY.  The Food Bank  will be joined by representatives of area egg farms, Moark and Sauder, to receive and help unload these delicacies. Fresh eggs are always a prized item for food banks due to their dense nutritional and high protein content, but they are also one of the hardest food categories for food banks to acquire.

Approximately 3 million New Yorkers are struggling to put food on the table. The recession has depleted the savings of the lowest-income New Yorkers, leaving them even more vulnerable to food poverty.  In addition, NYC residents are making sacrifices such as reducing their food intake and the quality of their food to get by financially, according to Less Food on the Table, the Food Bank's 2010 edition of the NYC Hunger Experience report series — an annual opinion poll conducted in collaboration with Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.  Approximately1.4 million New Yorkers rely on emergency food at soup kitchens and food pantries, including one in five children and one in six seniors. The egg donation will be distributed to the Food Bank’s network of approximately 1,000 food assistance programs throughout the five boroughs, and will help the Food Bank meet the growing demand for nutritious food.
