Nutrition & Health Education

Throughout the five boroughs, low-income neighborhoods are characterized by a lack of affordable, nutritious grocery stores, chronically stretched budgets and the prevalence of low-cost junk food. Among other problems, these circumstances contribute to high concentrations of diet-related conditions such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension. The Food Bank's Nutrition & Health Education Programs combat food poverty by helping New Yorkers in need move toward healthy lifestyles and supporting our network of food assistance programs to build capacity and improve existing services.

CookShop Classroom
Within New York City's elementary school system, 24 percent of students are obese. Our CookShop Classroom school and after-school curriculum work to promote healthy lifestyles and provide our city's children with nutrition education.

CookShop for Teens: EATWISE
EATWISE, our CookShop program for teens, empowers New York City high school students to become active members of their communities by raising awareness among peers about food issues and working to increase access to healthy food in low-income neighborhoods.

CookShop for Adults
CookShop for Adults aims to making healthy living easier for adult food stamp recipients and seniors in low-income neighborhoods through two specially designed workshop series.

Food Bank Network Services
The Food Bank provides our citywide network of more than 1,000 food assistance programs with education and nutrition services in order to strengthen the New York City hunger-relief community's ability to combat food poverty.
