CookShop for Adults
More than three million New Yorkers live in areas where household income is low, access to healthy food is sparse, and rates of obesity and diet-related disease are high. CookShop, the core nutrition education program of the Food Bank For New York City, confronts these challenges by helping low-income families learn to make healthy, affordable food choices.
CookShop for Adults is a complementary program for parents and guardians in schools that participate in CookShop Classroom. CookShop for Adults gets the whole family involved in making healthy food choices.
Participants complete six workshops focusing on such topics as reading food labels, meal planning, storage tips and portion sizes. Participants also conduct at-home cooking activities with their families. Through simple, healthy recipes using fresh, affordable ingredients, participants gain skills and knowledge to make CookShop part of their families' daily lives.
The Food Bank trains, equips and supports workshop leaders, who are chosen by each school. Each leader receives comprehensive, interactive training from Food Bank For New York City staff as well as the support, equipment, food and supplies needed to implement the curriculum successfully.
