CookShop for Adults
New York City's low-income neighborhoods suffer from a high incidence of diet-related diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension — resulting largely from a diet high in fat, calories and sodium. In these neighborhoods, a lack of healthy food sources combined with an overabundance of inexpensive, low-quality food options makes healthy lifestyles difficult at best. To address these issues, the Food Bank's suite of CookShop Programs encourages the development of healthy diets while helping participants meet challenges to healthy living.
CookShop for Adults offers a series of hands-on workshops for parents and guardians of children in public schools who participate in our CookShop Classroom Program, which promotes healthy eating habits among elementary school students. Through CookShop for Adults, parents and guardians gain the knowledge and resources they need to help continue their children's nutrition education at home — as well as to make nutritious recipes that help to improve the health of everyone in their household.
Workshop activities and information provided to parents and guardians include preparing and tasting new recipes, tips for cooking with children and for encouraging children to try new foods, nutrition information, food purchasing / storage tips and meal planning enable adults to make CookShop and healthy eating part of their families' daily lives.
